FOREWORD:

Statistics taking more importance in the day today development works of all the institutes including Government Departments, Private Establishments, Boards and Corporations etc. Especially donors from foreign countries and aid giving organizations from abroad need accurate, efficient and useful current data on statistics to fulfill their purposes.

Data base or storage of information in a useful manner should be kept handy at any time to be provided for the requirements made frequently by the Planners from several institutions, Research Students from Universities, officers from Administrative Fields and Funding Agents from foreign countries etc.

The District Statistical Hand book which contains widespread data of the Batticaloa District is mostly used by the above mentioned officers and others. The 19th edition updated with current data was prepared by the District Planning Secretariat.

This Publication covers on many areas such as Geography, Demography, Social, Health, Education, Agriculture, Livestock, Industry and other vital information of the District. The District Planning Secretariat and the Staff of Statistics office made much effort on creation of this book by collecting tabulating and presenting in a brief and explanatory from the data collected from various sources.

My sincere thanks to Hon. [1]. LOCATION AND AREA
The district of Batticaloa occupies the Central Part of the Eastern Province. It covers land area of approximately 2633.1 Square Km. and internal waterway of 229 square Km. the District accounts for 3.8% of the Countries total Land area.

* 1.3 Physical Feature :

Batticaloa district is morphologically different and very important region in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. It has diverse of landforms spread on surface in varies scales such as islands, sandbars, marsh lands, undulating plains and plateau, hills, mountains, valleys in small scales. All the aspects of morphology give naturally beautiful landscape to Batticaloa district. Based on the morphological background, the relief of Batticaloa district can be classified into three major parts (Kiruparajah-2012), of these;

1. Coastal lowlands

2. Coastal Undulating Plains

3. Coastal Uplands

Coastal lowland area is 5 meter in height above mean sea level and maximum elevation within the area is 15 meters in heartland of Batticaloa. The coastal undulating plain land is 5-50 meters in height above mean sea level. It’s a peniplains, most of the lands are alluvial flat maximum elevation within the area 103 meters (334 feet) in height in Kudumbimalai, Koralaipattu South Divisional Secretariat Division. The Coastal upland area defines above 50 meters above sea level. It is divided into two phases such as Western upland, and South-Western upland. The maximum elevation is 402 meters (1319 feet) within South-western upland in Thanthamalai, Manmunai South-west Divisional Secretariat Division. Around 85 percentage of the land in Batticaloa district is covered by coastal lowland and undulating plains remain 15 percentage of the land representing upland. The major tanks both Unnichchai and Rugam are located within two different valleys. Unnichchai valley joins with Batticaloa lagoon and Rugam valley joins with Valaichchenai lagoon nearby Sittandy.
* 1.4 Lagoon :
The lagoon which traverses through the District extends 73.5 Km from Verugal (in the North) to Batticaloa Town and also extends further from Batticaloa Town 35.2 Km to Thuraineelavanai (in the South)

Major part of the population is concentrated in the narrow strip between the sea and the lagoon. The Western part of the lagoon is sparsely populated and 90% of the paddy lands are found in this area. Lagoon Fishing takes important place as well as the coastal fishing. The lagoon is famous for its Crabs and prawns.

* 1.5 Forest :

The extent of the forest in the District is as follows In Hectares.

  • Dry Monsoon Forest : 21,870
  • Moist Monsoon Forest : 14,290
  • Forest Plantation : 4,700
  • Mangroves : 1,606
  • Sparse Forest :18,177

[2]. CLIMATE AND RAINFALL :

The annual rainfall varies from 864 mm to 3081 mm (50 years data) distribution of which has slight variation throughout the District. Most of the rain is being received during the months October to January and is both inter monsoon and North East Monsoon types. The Temperature ranges from 25o C to 35.4oC.

[3]. MINERAL RESOURCES :

Unlike in the other District mineral resource available here are limited. Rock Deposits, Sea shell, Pan Grass, Cane, Clay and Forest Timber are the mineral resources available.
[4]. POPULATION :

The District has a population of 586,601. Density of population is 220 Persons per square Km. in Batticaloa District. A high density of population exists at Eravur Town DS Division and lowest density of population is at Koralai Pattu North DS Division. Major 5 groups divide the population. There are Tamils, Muslims, Burgers, Singhalese and others.

[5]. SOCIAL STRUCTURE :
Major portion of the population is engaged in Agriculture while the fishing occupies the second place in the social structure. Other occupations are Industrial activities, Business and Employment in Government, Corporation and private Establishments.

A Teaching Hospital (01) with necessary facilities and bed strength is at Batticaloa Town. In addition, Base Hospitals (04), Divisional Hospital Type A (02), Divisional Hospital Type B (4), Divisional Hospital Type C (11), Peripheral Hospitals (01), Central Dispensary (03) & Maternity Home are functioning in the district for fulfill need of the people. Five private Hospitals (at town) although small serve the Public Satisfactorily.

* 5.2 EDUCATION :
A student population of 128,154 attends 353 schools in the district. There are 6,646 Teachers. The Eastern University and Open University are providing Higher Education in the District. The Eastern University functioning with the Faculties of Agriculture, Science, Commerce & Management, Arts & Culture, Health Care Sciences and Vipulananda Institute of esthetics studies. The College of Education at Thalankudha and Teachers training College at Batticaloa are provide teachers skills. The Technical College at Manchanthoduwai, Eastern Technical Institute and Vocational Training centers are Provide Technological skills trainings.

[6]. ECONOMY

The Economy of the District is depending mostly on Agriculture and Fishing. The District has about 49,850 Agriculture families and about 24,943 fishing families.

There are about 61,321 Hectares of paddy land in the District. Between the normal seasons Maha and Yala an inter seasonal cultivation called late Maha (From February to May) is practiced by the farmers in some areas with the help of minor tanks.

Unnichai, Vahaneri, Rugam, Navagiri, Thumpankerny, Kittulwewa, Kaddumuruvu and Kadukkamunai are some of the important Major Tanks that feed the paddy lands of the District along with numerous minor tanks.

About 7,896 Hectares of Highlands and Home Gardens (Including Coconut) have been cultivated wide spread throughout the District. The coastal villages lying from Kurukkalmadam to Kaluwanchikudy at Manmunai South & Eruvil Pattu DS Division are popular for Onion, Chillies, Betel and Vegetable cultivation.

Since long time before Cashew Nuts are popular and they are most important cash crops for Batticaloa District. But unfortunately after 1990 violence and for the prevailing adverse situation most of the large plots of cashew lands were neglected and abandoned by the owners. So cashew plants were by and by reduced in number and the production decreased. At present although there is an extent of about 47,500 acres available for Cashew Plantation a small portion is being utilized. Among many difficulties the Cashew Co-operation is trying hard to bring this cultivation to its earliest prosperous stage. The Thousand of Cashew plants issued for the beneficiaries under the ‘Divi Neguma’ programme for increase the Cashew production.

Fishing is second only to the paddy cultivation. The encroachment of the sea into the lagoon thus forming a good fishing environment is estimated as 56Km. The long sea cost with suitable bays at long intervals coupled with their rivers and the estuaries, the miles long lagoon and the innumerable tanks and water holes provide ample scope for this industry. There are 14,715 sea fishermen, 12,242 lagoon fishermen and inland fishermen 1,192 in Batticaloa district.
* 6.3 INDUSTRIES :
Large numbers of Industrial Establishments are mainly situated in Batticaloa Town and Kattankudy. All these are on small scale except the National Paper Corporation at Valaichenai and a Garment factory at Batticaloa Town which are the only four large scale factories.

Weaving, Rice Milling, Pottery, Mat-Weaving, Coir and Brick Manufacturing are some which play the main role in the industrial Economy of the District. There is about 58 small industrial are functioning under the Department of small industries.

Livestock is an important livelihood activity in the district. Neat cattle, Buffaloes, Goats and Chickens are major source of the activities. Neat cattle 243,878, Buffaloes 58,738, Goats 86,987 and Chickens 362,811 are in the district. The Milk production for the year 2014 was 17,599,564 litters. Number of milk collecting centers 36 and milk chilling centers 15 are in the Batticaloa district.

There are about 115,022 permanent houses, 18,360 semi-permanent houses and 22,350 Temporary houses are in the district. Many house programmes are implementing by the government for the improving the housing facilities to the district.

* 6.6 TOURISM :
Batticaloa is most popular place for tourism since early centuries. There are many places in the Batticaloa to the foreign and local tourism. Lagoon (Batticaloa, Valaichenai and Panichchankerny), Sandy beaches (Pasikkudah, Kallady, Savukkady and Panichchankerny), Natural reserve – forest park (Unnichchai, Kudumpimalai), cultural places (Kokadicholai Thaanthondiswarar Kovil, Amirthakali Mamankam kovil, Aeithyamalai church, Kattankudy Jamiul – Laffridin grant Jummah mosque, Mangalaramaya temple), Archeological site (Batticaloa Dutch fort).
